Sift together: 1 3/4 cup flour 3 t. baking powder dash salt 1/2 cup sugar Mix in another bowl: 1 slightly beaten egg 1 cup milk 1/4 cup melted butter Pour over flour mixture and stir enough to mix. date and nut bread

2 cups chopped dates 2 cups boiling water 2 cups sugar (scant) 2 teaspoons of baking soda 3 eggs 3 cups flour 1 cup walnuts, chopped Put dates in large mixing bowl. Sprinkle the baking soda over them. Pour the boiling water over both and let cool to lukewarm. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Pour into 2 greased and floured loaf pans. Bake at 350° F for approximately 1 hour....

cornbread

sift: 3/4 cup cornmeal 1 cup flour 1/3 cup sugar (I always use less here) 3 teapsoons baking powder dash salt mix in: 1 cup milk 1 egg, well beaten 2 tablespoons melted margarine or butter Spoon into shallow “buttered” (greased with Crisco or sprayed with a no-stick cooking spray) 8″ square pan (or similar size – can be any shape). russian tea

In large pot bring water to boil. Add two large tea bags, cinnamon and whole cloves. Add orange juice. Simmer. The longer you let the tea simmer, the better the tea will taste. Refrigerate any unused tea. Recipe courtesy of Laura’s maternal grandmother, Nana.

instant russian tea

2 cups of orange-flavored drink mix 2 cups of sugar ¼ cup of instant tea ¾ cup of lemon flavored instant tea 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon of ground cloves In large bowl, combine orange drink mix, sugar, teas, cinnamon and cloves. Mix well and store in airtight container. To serve, put three teaspoons of mix in a mug. Stir in one cup of boiling water. Adjust to taste....
