labor day gun show and flea market 2009

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

My grandparents have had a booth at the Labor Day Gun Show and Flea Market for (count ‘em) forty-one consecutive years now. Here are pictures of the craziness that ensues when the Flea Market comes to town.

I’ve been toying with the idea of tweeting for a while, but never took the plunge.  I don’t know what I am going to tweet about, but I am hoping to be inspired.  I don’t want to be a twat that tweets about using the bathroom, eating donuts or other nonsense.  Promise me if I start going down that path you will let me know?  Wanna follow me?  Go here : http://twitter.com/ajourneyoflife

Glad to know it is not just us.  The Asian tiger mosquitoes in our backyard are terrible this year.  They are a constant thorn in our sides and just about anywhere they can find bare skin.  We rarely venture out in our backyard, day or night, from about June through September because they are thick as thieves.  If we must brave the great outdoors, we coat ourselves with insect repellent.  However, because the chemicals in the repellents are not for children under three, Haven has only been acquainted to her backyard during the cool months.

I contacted the health department earlier this week and they came by on Monday to do an assessment of the mosquitoes in our back yard. Either I sounded desperate or the health department employees were eaten alive, because today they stopped by with some sort of trap in order to figure out exactly how bad our adult population is.

Tomorrow they return for the trap to get a head count of the adult mosquito population in our backyard.  I’m dying to ask them how the trap is made.  Honestly, it looks like with a trip to the hardware store and auto store, you can easily buy all the supplies.  And, damned if those those nasty mosquitoes were swarming around the contraption.

But, the traps only take care of the adults.  The baby mosquitoes grow wherever there’s water, so while they were here they went around with their little ladles dipping into our storm drains looking for breeding grounds, treating the water where mosquito eggs were found.

I am hopeful that we will win the war against the mosquitoes.  Or, at least squash the population.

This week is World Breastfeeding Week!  We are on our very last legs of nursing…Haven won’t stop biting me and seems to be less and less interested by the day.  However, I am grateful for everyone who supported us through this journey and am so thankful to have made it this far.

…off the road, across the median and opposing two lanes of traffic, through the chain linked fence and into a dorm.  No, really.  It happened.  On accident.  Which happens a lot on I-81.

And everybody had to stop and gawk to see what happened, which of course slowed down traffic.

gallbladder be gone

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

Weekend plans went out the window when acute pain led to a surprise trip to the emergency room at 5:30 am Friday morning.  While the world was mourning the loss of Michael Jackson, I spent the day hospitalized.  Shortly after being admitted, I had an ultrasound test done that confirmed my gallbladder was in fact the culprit and needed to be removed.  The day was pretty much a blur.  Within in a matter of hours I was given pain medication, diagnosed and in surgery.  While everything happened very fast, I am glad that everything was taken care of in one day, rather than having to suffer over several days.  The biggest blessing was knowing Haven was being taken care of with Matt’s parents while Matt was able to be by my side at the hospital.  Otherwise things would have been much more stressful.  While I missed Haven terribly, she was perfectly happy hanging out at home with grandma and grandpa, sipping milk from her sippy cup while I pumped and dumped breast milk at the hospital.

All is well.  I’m recovering at home and plan on taking it easy over the next week.  Matt is taking some time off from work and Matt’s mom is coming mid-week to help us.  I’m looking forward to having some down time as a family and think I might take advantage of the helping hands.  I’m overdue for a dentist appointment, haircut and a pedicure sure sounds lovely right now.

Thanks for all the well wishes!

happy birthday boss!

Every year, during the month of June, in a span of four days, FOUR people special to me celebrate their birthday. During this time we dine on birthday cake and ice cream while hundreds of candles (okay, maybe not hundreds, but over a hundred) are blown in the wind.

This year, the celebration began with a Elmo birthday party and will end with a bon voyage. Smack dab in the middle of all of that the man I love, who just so happens to be Haven’s daddy, or boss as he prefers to be called, turns another year older.  So, happy birthday boss!  We love you!
