happy 40th anniversary
Sunday, June 6th, 2010i want to rattle HIS teeth…
Monday, May 24th, 2010As a History major in college, this makes me sick. What fucking idiots do we have determining what is history and what is not history to our schoolchildren? And, publishers will print whatever shit comes out of their mouth. If this doesn’t piss you off, fine. But, it should.
midwives for haiti
Monday, February 15th, 2010The midwife that delivered Haven (I talked about Wendy before) is heading back to Haiti working with Midwives for Haiti. Here’s a video about her efforts, where you can see Wendy in action. Want to help? A donation of $250-$300 can pay for a midwife’s salary for a MONTH.

I’m trying to kick a cold (and the cough with it). I desperately need to decorate for Christmas (after all, we DO celebrate Christmas, or a variation thereof, and are having the festivities at our house). I need to get moving on purchasing presents (I did manage to order some fun presents for Haven this weekend, though). I need. I want.
What I really needed this Monday morning was something to put things into perspective. To ground me. For those of you churchy folks, I needed to see the light.
And here it was. I had already read about Stephanie and her devastating plane crash. But, I had not checked out her blog since August. Until this morning. When I quickly changed my tune.
I am thankful. Thankful to have a warm home. I am blessed. Blessed to have a family that consists of loving husband (who, by the way did a fabulous job of taking care of me this weekend), a beautiful, healthy daughter, two furry creatures and even all of the crazy relatives scattered around us. I am grateful.
wendy the wonder woman

When I was thirty weeks pregnant we set out to find a new provider to deliver our baby. We were with a midwifery group that works with physicians, but after I was scolded me for reading too much, I needed to find someone else. So, I ventured out looking for another group of midwives with hospital privileges. Lucky for us, we found Loudoun Community Midwives. Yes, in Loudoun County. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the lay of the land up here, that’s about an hour drive from where we live. But, after meeting with their staff we were SURE they were the right fit for us. And after going through delivery with them, I am convinced we made the right decision.
We immediately fell in love with the midwives. They let us ask all the questions we wanted during our office visits. We were a team before we ever went to the delivery room to play ball. The goal? To have a beautiful, healthy baby, with the hope of doing it the old fashioned way. But, our game plan went into overtime. Haven was born an entire day after my water broke. I didn’t start contractions on my own…so we started pitocin at noon….then around midnight…when I wanted to push…but shouldn’t because I was only 6 cm…so I had an epidural (which wasn’t part of the plan, but if we had any hopes of a vaginal birth it was necessary). Throughout that whole time, our midwife Wendy was a phenomenal coach who stayed with us even after her shift ended. She napped on a cot in the Birthing Inn, patiently waiting for little Haven to come out. We are both convinced that had we not had Wendy Haven would not have been born vaginally.
As if Wendy wasn’t Wonder Woman enough in our eyes, she is also involved with Midwives for Haiti. You can read more about Wendy’s work on her blog, Haiti Babies.
for the birds
Tuesday, October 20th, 2009Matt sent me a link last night to a series of photographs (as seen on boing boing) taken from the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I must warn you, the pictures are graphic and gut wrenching if you give a shit about the world we live in. For the past couple of years, I have been obsessed with consumerism and how our collection (and disposal) of the stuff we consume is going to at some point in time consume us. And, these pictures are proof that the crap we throw away is destroying our world. So, if you think that all the talk about recycling, anti-consumerism, global warming, etc. is for the birds, go eat some trash bags and bottle caps, feed some to YOUR babies and let me know how it went.
divided we fall
Thursday, September 17th, 2009First, Tiger Woods throws his golf club.
Second, Joe Wilson calls the president a liar…in CONGRESS.
Third, Serena Williams threatens a line judge at the U.S. Open.
And, lastly, Kanye West makes a total ass of himself by interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech.
And just think. This time in 2001 we WERE the UNITED States of America. What happened?
dirty dancing
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009With Patrick Swayze’s death this week I’ve had scenes of Dirty Dancing replaying over and over in my mind. For my generation, we propelled into puberty attempting to imitate Baby, with our Keds (no socks, of course) and rolled up jean shorts. For our moms, it was a flashback of grinding in the basement with their rebellious boyfriends. And for this British couple Kenny Ortega’s dance moves were recreated for their wedding day. Whatever way you look at it, nobody puts Baby in a corner.
