spring cleaning : part one

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Yesterday we started our spring cleaning mission.  Matt mowed the lawn for the first time this year, while I puttered around and picked up dried bean pods for the umpteenth time.  In our neighborhood the city is coming by today and picking up various household crap people have left on the curb.  Not wanting to disappoint the poor souls that have to muck around and load people’s crap over the weekend, we’ve made a hefty donation.  And, we were pretty harsh.  After a phone conversation earlier this week with my very own personal de-cluttering mentor, I’m on a mission.  So, today I am bidding farewell to a couple of coolers we really don’t have the space for, a large “portable” propane grill we bought for the U.S. Grand Prix camping trips, a sewing table that (again) we don’t have the space for, a cabinet we removed from our laundry room, some yard waste and, last but not least, the 1970s puke green Ethan Allen club chairs that I have so desperately wanted to reupholster for ten. long. years.  I think it is time to go our separate ways.  I’m moving on.

status update : week 18

Tonight, we went to our favorite local hamburger joint for dinner.  At the counter, my husband rattled off his order, then I followed with mine.  After we were finished, the little Mexican man taking our order asked us, “And for the baby?”  Although I completely understood what he said, it just didn’t register, so I just stared at him, completely unresponsive.  Fortunately, my husband realized I was comatose and replied, “No, not yet.”  After I digested what just happened, I looked at my husband and told him that’s the first time a stranger (who had no idea of my “condition”) had actually acknowledged the fact I was pregnant.  As strange as it may sound, it was quite a moment for me to take in.  I’ve had such a difficult time letting the reality of pregnant wash over me, and it’s baby steps like this that seem to get me closer to reality.

blogging goddess

Late last year I discovered dooce.com (how I had not heard of her sooner still amazes me),  authored by Heather B. Armstrong, which has quickly become my favorite blog in the whole wide world, with the exception of those of you that I personally know and have met and read your blogs religiously, of course.  Heather is a veteran blogger, who is hilarious and real.  You can read all about her previous lives here, but in her current life she lives in Salt Lake City, UT and is a blogging goddess with several of us who worship the ground she walks on.  Who else walks away with four Bloggies in one year?  If you haven’t gone to dooce.com, you don’t know what you are missing.  But, for those sensitive souls out there, I will warn you.  She doesn’t pussyfoot around and she might offend you.  However, reading her blog beats prime-time television any day of the week.  It’s that funny.Update : There’s a new Wall Street Journal article about Dooce, along with their top ten motherhood blogs.

pregnancy brain

I have it.

I forgot my mailing address this week.  I sorted through all of the post office box numbers in my brain, but in the end I had to look MY address up off my computer.  All that mental effort to get an informational packet from the hospital where I am planning to deliver.

For all of the loyal viewers, I am sorry that there wasn’t a TAGT last week.  I should have posted a warning, because it appears some people went into shock, especially with the scarce amount of blogging going on lately.  However, we are doing just fine…we just ran away for a week.  We now return to our regularly scheduled program (and TAGT will resume tomorrow).

status update : week 17

Friday, April 4th, 2008

For week seventeen, I actually am nowhere near a computer, much less an internet connection.  This week I have been enjoying spending quality time with my husband on a cruise.  It’s been extremely nice to escape the hectic world, talk about life for a while, and of course, not having to cook or clean all week has been pretty nice.  Today we are soaking up the warm sunshine in Key West, Florida, munching on conch fritters, eating Kermit’s chocolate covered frozen key lime pie, drinking beer (I only indulged in a sip) at the original Sloppy Joe’s, now named Captain Tony’s Saloon, shopping for some Kino sandals and taking a tour of the Ernest Hemingway house.  Throughout the week I have noticed I get winded much easier than before, especially when hiking up the stairs on the cruise ship or walking through Key West.  I guess pumping blood for two people take a little more effort than pumping just for one.  I’m still having weird numbness in my leg, and only this week have I started having numbness in the heel of my foot as well, which is strange.  My appetite hasn’t increased and unfortunately, I am finding that the cruise ship cuisine is not what everybody makes it out to be.  So, we survive yet another week of pregnancy with the eclectic mix of people in Key West.
